In fact, the loud beep sound that happens first (before the shock) surprised her enough that I don't think she ever made it to the point where she was shocked. However, it only lasted a few days to a week before it broke internally. I tried new batteries but something was broken inside. Also, I tried the shock on myself before putting it on my dog. It was potent for sure but I wanted to do it on myself before subjecting my dog
