I bought this on Amazon almost a year ago for my two rescue beagles, after reading the wonderful reviews. My goal was to make them better on and off the leash so we could enjoy walks more, and deter problem behaviors.
This truly might be the best of its kind on the market-- I'll give it that. When it works, it works well. The remote offers a lot of flexibility with training-- a range of intensities for the shock aspect, different beeps, etc. In short order, all my dogs had to do was hear it beep and they'd straighten out. With the male dog, he only had to be shocked TWICE-- on the "3" setting-- to become extremely obedient to my commands and to that warning beep. And here I thought he was dumb or poorly trained by his previous owner-- *wrong*-- he just needed motivation. He turned into Lassie as soon as he figured out what that warning beep means.
Now for the negative. I took away one star for the fact that the collar and remote lose track of each other frequently. If you're letting your dog off-lead with this, you'd best be sure you test it first to be sure the collar and remote are still synchronized. Mine forget about each other all the time, and what a HUGE pain that is. You go to beep/zap the dog and he trots along oblivious to it because-- surprise!-- the sync has failed!
The second star I took away for pathetically poor battery life. I think the box says it can last for like 40 hours or something. Complete falsehood. I know how to properly prep/charge a battery. I charged this thing for 14 continuous hours before first use. It lasts 10 hours if I'm lucky, and that's with NO use of the remote. That's just in its "on," standby state. For a while we had a problem with one dog howling in his crate in the middle of the night (out of boredom), and I had him sleep in the collar so I could warn him to stop. If I put the collar on him at 6 PM, after it sat on the charger all day-- let him out for the last time at 12 AM and put him in the crate-- and then hit the button when he starts howling at 6 AM, no chance it'll work. Battery's dead. So I had to remember to put it on him at the last possible minute to ensure battery life over one night. What a pain.
The third star I took away for the fact that as much as this item costs-- because that is a whole lotta money-- it shouldn't have these problems. So third star is for prohibitive cost compared to quality.
::edit:: I have since added one star back on, based on the fact that I've read the comments on this review, weighed that against my experience, and decided it's more fair to say my experience with it is OK rather than sub-par. The issues have not changed, but I continue to use the product so it can't be THAT bad.
If Petsafe reads this review and thinks there is just something wrong with my collar, they can feel free to comment/contact me to replace it and I'll revise my review. I don't like giving negative reviews at all. But when an item costs as much as this one does, buyers need to know what they're really getting, and unfortunately I felt misled by the reviews/product description in light of my own experience.
